HORSES IN HINDU LEGENDS

Puranic legends state that the churning of the oceans resulted in the first horse springing forth. Similar to the Pegasus, it was winged and milk white in colour but with a black tail and seven heads (in some translations). The horse by the name of Uchaishravas became a resident of the Hindu celestial abode “Swarga” as the thunder god Indra’s vehicle, though Indra eventually cut off its wings and sent it to earth as a gift to humanity. The wings were cut to prevent it from leading someone back to heaven.

George Harrison(of the Beatle’s fame) uses Uchaishravas image in his label for stallions at stud records. horses for sale were a very potent sacrifice in ancient Hindu rituals with a special ceremony called the “Ashvamedha” performed as a ritual sacrifice of a horse to the gods in the belief that the person performing the sacrifice, golden knife in hand, would surely be rewarded heaven. The Hindu deity Rama was supposedly conceived after ponies for sale was sacrificed to restore his mother’s Kaushalya’s fertility.
